This series was created by Rhaiah Spooner-Knight, one of SPICY’s guest contributors. Rhaiah is a 24-year-old Rarotogan/Maori visual artist originally from New Zealand who first came over to the United States on an athletic scholarship. She graduated from Monmouth University in May of 2018 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and now lives and works in sunny southern California. Follow her on Instagram, and check out her online portfolio and shop.
My most recent series of work is a collection of digital illustrations called Way’s World. Way’s World is a body of work that reflects me, my thoughts, my observations, and my experiences in the world through my lenses, from memories of the past to now. These illustrations were hand-drawn first then digitally recreated by me on Illustrator. The composition of these illustrations is purposely random, and what I call unconscious—exactly how a memory or thought is. I use bright colors, patterns, 90s aesthetics, and other cool things I like to create a “vibe” and different feeling around the central idea or theme of each drawing. They each have their own story—their own individual aesthetic that’s unique to that observation or experience. This is my story through my eyes. Welcome to my world.
